Biography of Rev. Dr. L. Ronald Durham

Rev. Dr. L. Ronald Durham, the retired senior pastor of Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Daytona Beach, Florida, was called to preach at the age of sixteen, sought his higher education at Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C. on full scholarship, received his Doctor of Pastoral Studies from Evangel Christian University in Monroe, LA., his Doctor of Sacred Divinity from American Bible Institute, and an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Bethune Cookman University, Daytona Beach.

“He is not a man who seeks position, but he is one whom position seeks”. He was Moderator of the North Jersey District Missionary Baptist Association and counselor to the National Black Caucus of Washington, DC immediately preceding his relocation to Florida, as well as a teacher for the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education for over 18 years. Before retirement, Dr. Durham served as the 5th Vice President of the Florida General Baptist Convention, and 1st Vice Moderator of the Mt. Zion North East Coast District Missionary Baptist Association.

Since coming to Daytona Beach, Dr. Durham spearheaded the creation of the Daytona Beach Black Clergy Alliance, of which he served two terms as its President. In 2007 he became the first African-American to give the opening prayer at the Speedway’s Daytona 500 and Winn-Dixie races, and led his church in the construction of an 8,000 sq ft. multi-million dollar state-of-the-art childcare learning center, Friendship Academy, which opened in April of 2008, and enrolls more than 100 students.

In 2011, marking the 111th Anniversary of Greater Friendship Baptist Church, Dr. Durham led the congregation in the complete refurbishing of the lobby and sanctuary at a cost of $111,000. He is a visionary who takes his calling seriously and solemnly.

As a civil servant, Dr. Durham served on the Halifax Hospital Board of Associates, is chairman of the Civil Right Commission for the Daytona Beach Black Clergy Alliance, serves as one of only three African-Americans on the Civic League of the Halifax Area, is the immediate past Chairman of the Martin Luther King Celebration for Florida Inc, a member of the NAACP, and a former Trustee of the Great Bethune-Cookman University. He also held the position of Community Relations Coordinator for Halifax Health-Hospice, until his recent move to become the Community Relations Manager for the City of Daytona Beach.

Dr. Durham also currently serves as a member of the Board of Director’s for the First Step Shelter Inc., a 501c3 advocacy group for finding solutions to homelessness in Volusia County. He serves as a Chaplain for the Volusia County Sheriff’s Department.

Dr. Durham is a devoted husband, a loving father of three daughters, and a friend to all who seek his sound spiritual council. In his 45-year ministry, he has been God’s birthing ground for exceptional pastoral leadership. He is the “spiritual father’ of eight daughters and eighteen sons in ministry, who, like their spiritual father, aspire to teach sound biblical doctrine.

Dr. Durham is an author and expositor. His book, The Secret Power of Prayer by Townsend Press (Sunday School Publishing Board) is the bedside prayer bible of thousands. He is a past writer for the Sunday School Publishing Board (Baptist Layman – 5 years; 2004-2010 Sunday School Commentary writer; Baptist Adult Quarterly Teacher’s Guide 2008-09, and numerous articles in THE CHRISTIAN INFORMER).

Dr. Durham is a humble and charitable man, without pretense or posturing. For this reason, thousands of pastors around the world freely seek his advice by email, and call him friend. He is a much sought after preacher, conducting numerous revivals, and other guest preaching appointments. His objectives are complex, yet his demeanor is straightforward and uncomplicated. He just wants to lead the world to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
